1VAC30-30-20. Background.
There has been a growing public awareness of the link between the inhalation of asbestos fibers and various diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung and other cancers. As a result, legislation was enacted by the 1987 General Assembly (§§ 2.1-526.12 through 2.1-526.17 of the Code of Virginia) and was modified by the 1988 General Assembly which required the Department of General Services to develop survey standards for the inspection of buildings other than school buildings in order to identify the presence of asbestos and to the extent practicable the relative hazard to health or safety posed by any asbestos identified.
