DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Housing and Community Development, a state policy board, promulgates regulations related to housing, community development, building safety, and fire prevention. These regulations include the Uniform Statewide Building Code, Statewide Fire Prevention Code, Industrialized Building Safety Regulations, Manufactured Home Safety Regulations, Amusement Device Regulations, Virginia Certification Standards, Standards Governing Building Code Academies, and Virginia Enterprise Zone Grant Program Regulations. The Department of Housing and Community Development operates a Virginia Building Code Academy to train persons in recent building code and fire prevention code regulations.

The board's Codes and Standards Committee considers building code and fire prevention code issues throughout the year. The Housing and Community Development Committee of the board meets to consider issues related to safe and affordable housing, economic growth, stability, and safety in Virginia's communities. The board advises the department in the development of the Consolidated Plan submitted to HUD to guide and coordinate housing and community development programs in Virginia.

The department administers programs in the Commonwealth related to housing, community development, economic development, and broadband infrastructure.
