BOARD OF BAR EXAMINERS

AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Bar Examiners is responsible for the examination of applicants and otherwise ascertaining the qualifications of applicants for admission to the Bar of Virginia and is authorized to promulgate rules and regulations therefor pursuant to Article 3 (§ 54.1-3919 et seq.) of Chapter 39 of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia.

The board is required by Articles 3 (§ 54.1-3919 et seq.) and 4 (§ 54.1-3925 et seq.) of Chapter 39 of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia to issue a license to practice law in Virginia to every applicant who successfully passes the required examination and complies with all applicable laws and rules of the Supreme Court and the board. The board may issue a certificate to practice law in Virginia to an applicant if the board is satisfied that the applicant meets the criteria for admission without examination established by Rule 1A:1 of the Supreme Court of Virginia and the guidelines promulgated thereunder. In addition, the board evaluates applications for admission under Rules 1A:5, Part I, 1A:6, 1A:7, 1A:8, and 1A:9. The board also sets the fees to be paid by each applicant.
