AGENCY SUMMARY
William & Mary in Virginia, established by Chapter 28 (§ 23.1-2800 et seq.) of Title 23.1 of the Code of Virginia, is the second oldest institution of higher education in the country. It serves more than 9,000 students. On the undergraduate level, the university offers curriculum relating to liberal arts and sciences, business administration, data science, computer science, fine arts, and social sciences. Master's and doctoral degrees are offered in fields such as American studies, computer science, education, history, law, marine science, business administration, physics, and psychology. The main campus is located in Williamsburg and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science is in Gloucester Point.
The Board of Visitors for William & Mary also oversees Richard Bland College, established by § 23.1-2806 of the Code of Virginia. Established in 1960, Richard Bland College is located in Prince George and serves more than 2,000 students through its full-time, part-time, and dual degree programs. Richard Bland College offers an associate of arts degree and an associate of sciences degree focusing on behavioral sciences, business administration, math and computer science, physical science, life science, and clinical lab sciences.
Among other statutory duties, the Board of Visitors is authorized by Chapter 13 (§ 23.1-1300 et seq.) of Title 23.1 of the Code of Virginia, to promulgate regulations and policies concerning the institution; adopt regulations or institution policies for parking and traffic on property owned, leased, maintained, or controlled by the institution; adopt regulations or institution policies for the employment and dismissal of professors, teachers, instructors, and other employees; adopt regulations or institution policies for the acceptance and assistance of students; adopt regulations or institution policies for the conduct of students in attendance and for the rescission or restriction of financial aid, suspension, and dismissal of students who fail or refuse to abide by such regulations or policies; to provide care, preservation, and improvement of the property belonging to the university and with the protection and safety of students and other persons residing on such property.
