OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY 

AGENCY SUMMARY 

Old Dominion University, located in the City of Norfolk in the metropolitan Hampton Roads region of coastal Virginia, is a dynamic public research institution that serves its students and enriches the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world through rigorous academic programs, strategic partnerships, and active civic engagement. ODU offers over 300 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees, including 46 doctoral degrees and three educational specialist degrees. The main campus is located in Norfolk, Virginia, with extended higher education centers in Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, and Hampton. The board of visitors is authorized by Chapter 20 (§ 23.1-2000 et seq.) of Title 23.1 of the Code of Virginia to make regulations and policies concerning the institution.

The board of visitors is authorized to adopt regulations or institutional policies for the acceptance and assistance of students; for the conduct of students in attendance and for the rescission or restriction of financial aid, suspension, and dismissal of students who fail or refuse to abide by such regulations or policies; for the employment and dismissal of professors, teachers, instructors, and other employees; and for parking and traffic on property owned, leased, maintained, or controlled by the institution. 

The board of visitors is required to establish policies and procedures regarding a dependent student's receipt of mental health treatment at the student health or counseling center under certain circumstances and regarding the release of a dependent student's educational record. 

In addition, the board of visitors is authorized by Chapter 13 (§ 23.1-1300 et seq.) of Title 23.1 of the Code of Virginia to establish programs to promote student compliance with laws relating to the use of alcoholic beverages and the awareness and prevention of sexual crimes committed upon students and to establish guidelines for the initiation or induction of students into any social fraternity or sorority.
