AGENCY SUMMARY

The Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) is designated as the single state agency to administer the federal Medicaid program under Title XIX of the Social Security Act. DMAS plays a critical role in improving the health and well-being of Virginians through access to high-quality health care coverage.

The department operates under the supervision of the Secretary of Health and Human Resources.
