BOARD OF OPTOMETRY

AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Optometry is a licensing and regulatory board housed within the Department of Health Professions. For the statutory authority of the boards within the department, see Subtitle III (§ 54.1-2400 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia.

The board is authorized by Chapter 32 (§ 54.1-3200 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia to license optometrists, to establish standards for licensure and governing practice, and to approve courses of continuing education required for annual license renewal. The board is also authorized to promulgate regulations regarding the certification of optometrists to administer diagnostic pharmaceutical agents for the purpose of examining the human eye and to certify qualified optometrists to prescribe certain therapeutic pharmaceutical agents for the treatment of certain diseases and abnormal conditions of the human eye and its adnexa.
