Chapter 150. Regulations Relating to Standards and Specifications for Overdimensional Warning Lights

19VAC30-150-5. Definitions.

The following words and terms when used in this chapter shall have the following meanings, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

"Overdimensional light" means a high-intensity, flashing, blinking, or alternating amber warning light visible for at least 500 feet required for use on any vehicle that is engaged in either escorting or towing overdimensional materials, equipment, boats or manufactured housing units by authority of a highway hauling permit issued pursuant to § 46.2-1139 of the Code of Virginia.

"SAE" means the Society of Automotive Engineers.

19VAC30-150-10. Purpose.

The purpose of this regulation is to establish standards and specifications, as required by § 46.2-1026 of the Code of Virginia, for warning lights used in the escorting or towing of overdimensional materials, equipment, boats, or manufactured housing units by authority of a highway hauling permit issued pursuant to § 46.2-1139 of the Code of Virginia.

19VAC30-150-30. Description and identification.

The warning light will be a flashing or rotating amber warning light that meets or exceeds Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Standard J845 for warning lights. The light will be identified with the Code SAE-W or SAE-W3-1, -2, -3 in accordance with SAE J759 and SAE J845, Lighting and Identification Code.

19VAC30-150-40. Performance requirements.

Lights must meet or exceed standards as set forth in SAE J575, which include the following tests:

1. Vibration test;

2. Moisture test;

3. Dust test;

4. Corrosion test;

5. Photometry test.

19VAC30-150-50. Color.

The color will be amber (yellow) and will meet or exceed the requirements of SAE J578, Standard for color specification.

19VAC30-150-60. Proof of compliance.

Whenever the Superintendent of State Police deems it necessary, he may require the manufacturer or distributor of overdimensional warning lights to furnish proof that the light or any part of the light meets or exceeds the requirements of this chapter.
