BOARD OF PHYSICAL THERAPY

AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Physical Therapy is a licensing and regulatory board housed within the Department of Health Professions. For the statutory authority of the boards within the department, see Subtitle III (§ 54.1-2400 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia.

The board is authorized  by Chapter 34.1 (§ 54.1-3473 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia to regulate the practice of physical therapy and carry out the provisions of the Code of Virginia regarding the qualifications, examination, licensure, regulation, and continuing competency of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. The board is also authorized to certify physical therapists who meet certain criteria to provide services without referral and promulgate regulations to facilitate participation in the Physical Therapy Compact.
