BOARD OF DENTISTRY
AGENCY SUMMARY
The Board of Dentistry is a licensing and regulatory board housed within the Department of Health Professions. For the statutory authority of the boards within the department, see Subtitle III (§ 54.1-2400 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia.
The board is authorized by Chapter 27 (§ 54.1-2700 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia to license and regulate the practice and teaching of dentistry and dental hygiene. The board is also authorized to promulgate regulations and set the standards of practice for the registration of dental assistants II, mobile dental clinics and for the issuance of permits for dentists who use moderate sedation or deep sedation or general anesthesia in dental offices as well as register dentists who practice oral and maxillofacial surgery and certify those who perform cosmetic procedures. The Board also promulgates regulations to facilitate participation in the Dental and Dental Hygienist Compact.
