BOARD OF FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND EMBALMERS

AGENCY SUMMARY

The Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers is a licensing and regulatory board housed within the Department of Health Professions. For the statutory authority of the boards within the department, see Subtitle III (§ 54.1-2400 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia.

The Board is authorized by Chapter 28 (§ 54.1-2800 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia to license and regulate individuals and establishments providing funeral and embalming services, to regulate and inspect funeral establishments and crematories, to supervise programs for funeral service interns, to regulate preneed funeral contracts and preneed funeral trust accounts, to register crematories, to improve and promote standards of service and practice, and to carry out the licensing act. The Board is also directed to enforce applicable regulations of the State Board of Health and of local governments.
