BOARD OF NURSING
AGENCY SUMMARY
The Board of Nursing is a licensing and regulatory board housed within the Department of Health Professions. For the statutory authority of the boards within the department, see Subtitle III (§ 54.1-2400 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia.
The board is authorized by Chapter 30 (§ 54.1-3000 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia to license registered and practical nurses, to register clinical nurse specialists, to certify nurse aides and establish a career advancement certification for certified nurse aides, to register medication aides in assisted living facilities, to approve and prescribe minimum standards for nursing education programs, to approve curricula therefor, to license massage therapists, and to promulgate regulations for the delegation of certain nursing tasks and procedures to an appropriately trained unlicensed person and regulations for collecting, storing, and making available nursing workforce information.
The board is also authorized by Chapter 29 (§ 54.1-2900 et seq.) of Title 54.1 of the Code of Virginia, jointly with the Board of Medicine, to promulgate regulations regarding the licensure and practice of advanced practice registered nurses and prescriptive authority for advanced practice registered nurses.
The board is authorized by Article 6 (§ 32.1-122.10:001 et seq.) of Chapter 4 of Title 32.1 of the Code of Virginia to cooperate with the Board of Health's promulgation of regulations establishing a nursing scholarship and loan repayment program for registered nurses, practical nurses, and certified nurse aides who agree to perform a period of nursing service in a Commonwealth long-term care facility. The board is also authorized to promulgate regulations to facilitate participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact.
